Literary Charities

Christmas is mere weeks away! If haven't already grabbed sweet gifts for your friends and family, we highly suggest these books. And perhaps send that list over to someone buying you a present this year, so you can get some excellent reads for the holiday too.

But let's not forget the true spirit of Christmas; giving. This week, we at the Lone Book Club have put together a list of five literary themed charities for you to consider this season of giving. There are many less fortunate out there who deserve to have the joy of reading under their tree, stuffed in a stocking, or however it may come.

1. World Reader
This charity is "a global non-profit, headquartered in San Francisco and with offices in Europe and Africa, on a mission to eradicate illiteracy among the world’s poorest people." They provide e-readers and e-books for children in developing countries.

2. First Book
First Book provides access to new books for children in need.
To date, First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada.

"To date First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada." They are dedicated to making sure children in need have access to the latest and greatest books no matter what format they come in.

3. Kids in Need, Books in Deed
Run out of Florida State University, this charity brings free books and author visits to children in need throughout the state of Florida. Having spent many years in Florida, this charity is near and dear to our hearts.

4. The Comic Book Project
This unique literacy initiative "engages young people in the process of planning, writing, designing, and publishing original comic books." It's a one-0f-a-kind and fun way to encourage literacy and creativity in youths.

5. United Through Reading
"United Through Reading is the nation’s first nonprofit to promote the read-aloud experience for separated military families.  United Through Reading offers deployed parents the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children..." Being read to by your parents is an invaluable part of growing-up, and this charity makes it possible for these military families.

That's our top five list, but there are so many more great charities out there just a Google away. So this holiday season, don't forget those less fortunate and help give the gift of reading
